A bass guitarist with cult shock rockers Cradle of Filth had cannabis and cocaine in his system when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed, an inquest heard.

Bassist Jon Kennedy, 44, is believed to have nodded off at the the wheel at around 6am when his white BMW hit a tree in Broughton, North Wales.

The inquest heard he had been banned from driving but had been working a night shift at a Wrexham factory to get extra cash for Christmas the morning of the collision.

Mr Kennedy - also known as 'Jonny Darko' by the band's fans - was found dead in his vehicle following the single-car crash last September.

David Hodges, a forensic collision investigator at North Wales Police, told the inquest the BMW came off the road, before colliding with street fixtures and then a tree.

The Cradle of Filth bassist was driving home from a night shift at a factory in Wrexham despite being banned from being behind the wheel

The inquest heard the 'amazing dad' had worked 72 hours at the factory in a bid to earn some additional money for the festive season.

Tim Carter, a work colleague, said that Mr Kennedy was often tired at work and was regularly sleeping, with the father expressing his exhaustion to a colleague before clocking off.

The Ruthin inquest heard it was 'possible' that Mr Kennedy fell asleep at the wheel prior to the collision.

A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Kennedy had cocaine and cannabis in his system - above the legal driving limit.

However, it was unknown how much of a toxic effect this had on Mr Kennedy's cognitive function.

The inquest also heard Mr Kennedy was disqualified from driving at the time of the collision.

The coroner recorded a conclusion of road traffic collision.

Mr Kennedy was previously the bass guitarist and a singer in the world-renowned metal band Cradle of Filth for a year between 1994 and 95.

Mr Kennedy was also one of the founders of the black metal band Hecate Enthroned, and performed his first gig in front of 16,000 people in Portugal when he was only a teenager.

His wife, Lynne, described her husband as an 'amazing dad' to his three children, and step child. She said he was a 'proud Welshman' and her 'soul mate'. She added that he will be 'dearly missed'.

His previous bands had paid tribute to the 'Proud Welshman' following his death last September

Frontman Dani Filth paid tribute to Kennedy who spent a year with the band in 1994 before going onto other projects.

He said: 'He was a great bassist and singer who filled in for Cradle at a time of such magical import, mayhem and mischief.

'I distinctly remember having a wickedly wonderful week staying just outside Wrexham in Wales at Jon's mum's house in 1995. We were always pulling pranks and playfully winding each other up back in those days.

'He will be missed! Godspeed old friend.'

Black metal band Hecate Enthroned also took to social media to pay tribute to the doting father-of-three.

A Facebook statement by the band said: 'We are shook and devastated by the passing of our brother Jon Kennedy.

'This isn't just a huge loss for his family and friends, but for the thousands of music fans and genre lovers that he touched and inspired. Jon's passion for music was huge and at times all consuming which is reflected in how he is revered within the Black Metal scene.

'Working with Jon on music was fun, inspiring and challenging because anyone with that drive and passion was a force and this continued after Hecate with all his musical endeavours right up to the end with the powerhouse Imperial Genocide.

'But this passion was matched with the love for his family and his close friends. A loving father and husband and son.

'Our thoughts and hearts are with his wonderful family at this incredibly difficult time. As we mourn our brother please be mindful of his family and respect their space. But please raise the horns for Jon. Nos da Jon.'

Cradle of Filth were formed in Suffolk in 1991.

The band's musical style evolved originally from black metal to a cleaner and more 'produced' amalgam of gothic metal, symphonic metal and other metal genres.

Their lyrical themes and imagery are heavily influenced by Gothic literature, poetry, mythology and horror films.
