Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

The blue-and gold harlequin macaw is a stunning bird. Its stunning beauty is well-known. Its sociable personality makes it a great companion for families. It is also very good in its interactions and quickly master new words and tricks.

Lolita's Personality

They are easily bored and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners don't interact with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized can become aggressive, and even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but they are also a great companion for children.

Despite their adoring nature, these birds are very loud and can be a nuisance to those who live near. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud cries that could be disruptive to those who live in apartments or condos.

Another intriguing characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only way to determine the sex. Once the sex of the birds is known the breeding process can begin.

Lolita's Care

For years, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to the sea.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to eventually open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself and not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and connect with their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

These updates show that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health is declining.

It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can swim deep in the water, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly, these plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
