After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of their previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes a cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa during a recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest along with keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto reunited for the benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time that all of the original Toto members were performing together for over 31 years. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.
