Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or running. Their compact design makes them easy to manoeuvre, even in tight spaces.

If you want an easy ride in your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are susceptible to punctures, so make sure you are prepared with a repair kit.

Sturdy frame

New figures show that three-wheeled buggies, that symbol of the noughties that had more money than common sense, are in rapid decline. Four-wheelers are replacing them, and are more versatile and easy to drive while still looking stylish.

The general principle is that the larger the wheels are, the easier it will be for your buggy to deal with rough ground and bumpy pavements. The larger wheels on both the front and back makes it much easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on rough terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried this buggy on a newborn baby and a best 3 wheel stroller-year-old child and found it very sturdy. It was able to withstand cobbles, grass and rough pavements, as well as dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push, and extremely solid on rough terrain. The tyres, that are inflatable and require to be pumped up occasionally and have a suspension built-in. This was very comfortable for my children.

The size and shape of the seat is another thing to consider. You will want it to be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort. You will also need it to recline so that they can lie flat. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat that lets your child face you, while other buggies only allow a face-to-parent one.

Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and can easily climb and descend kerbs. They also come with a suspension system that, in her words "smoothes out bumps with great efficiency".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they can make some buggies quite broad and can struggle to fit through narrow spaces. This is a problem if you use it for jogging, or need to fit through doorways that are narrow while on the move. Most models come with compact folding options, which permit you to take off the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to maneuver

One of the primary benefits to a three wheel buggy is that it is much more maneuverable, especially with a child in tow. The way they are built means that the front wheels rotate on a dime and are really easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for tricky terrain such as parks, cobbles, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a lightest 3 wheel stroller wheeler with her newborn and toddler and wrote: "The Terrain was a delight to maneuver on the ground and the swivel front wheel being particularly helpful. I was also awed by the way it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when for descending or on a rough terrain."

The only drawback of this great maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean it has to struggle in tight spaces, something to keep in mind especially if you live in a city region. If this is a problem, a 4-wheeled buggy may be the better choice for you.
