Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was a return to a traditional sextet style, and a more consistent, stronger effort that had a more grittier edge. The more edgier sound of Turn Back reflected the maturation in the group. Drummer Bobby Kimball's increased ability to play was evident in the vocals of Joseph Williams, who had grown more confident and mature. David Paich's work was more precise, sharper and less cloned previously recorded recordings.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live performance that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new record featuring songs that were never recorded before.
