How to Repair a Bifold Door Top Pivot

The top pivot of a bifold closet door can become loose and scrape the floor. You can correct this by loosening the set screw for the top bracket.

The top pivot pin is made of a screw made of metal that is inserted into a plastic cap that has a rounded end and stays in the track above the front door. You'll also require a screwdriver, or perhaps a pair pliers.

Take off the pin at the bottom.

Bifold doors are great for maximizing space in closets however, they can begin to slide or scratch against the floor or pop out of their brackets. The good part is that you can usually fix the problems by making a few simple adjustments.

The most common problem is the bottom pin that is loose or falls out of its bracket. You can fix this by depressing the spring-loaded wheel located at the top of the door and swinging the door to align it with the bottom track. Once the gap has been adjusted, tighten the screw that holds the top pivot bracket to hold the door in its place.

A typical issue is when the edge of the door's bottom scrapes against the carpet. To take off the pin at the bottom take both panels at the sides and lift them off of the lower track and off their brackets. Release the locking levers on the bracket's bottom to let the pin loose. If the pin does not have a mounting bracket you can attach a screw with a flat head between the bottom of pivot flange and the door to pull the pin away from the door. Once you can get a firm grip on the pin turn it left and right and then pull it out of the door. If you aren't able to remove the pin, you might have to take the entire panel from the track system. Remove the Top Pin

They are great at saving space but can be frustrating when they begin to sag or scratch the floor or veer off track. There are a few easy adjustments that can often get them back on track.

If the doors slide in a different way then loosen the screw that is on the top bracket pivot point and move it a bit. Close the door and check whether it is in alignment with the frame. If it does then tighten the screw.

The bottoms of bifold internal doors are often scraped by the carpet. If this is the issue you can raise the bottom of the doors with the bottom pin adjustment. If the door is too high, you'll need to remove the doors and cut them down with the aid of a saw.
