Choosing a Double Pushchair Twin

Side-by-Side

They are the most popular type of double pushchair and generally can seat two children side-by-side. They tend to be wider than single pushchairs, meaning they are less agile on the sidewalk and can be a little tricky to navigate between kerbs with a car seat attached. However the extra width does mean that they're generally more comfortable to maneuver through doorways and are more evenly distributed making them more comfortable to carry around on your back.

They can be used as a twin pram from the beginning and a lot of models can accommodate a carrycot and 2 car seats. Some models can be converted to one-mode, with a basket beside (like the Cybex Venus).

One of the best travel pram examples of this is the Bugaboo Donkey 5 which, in Twin Mode, allows you to fit the rear seat and a carrycot side-by-side. This creates a fully enclosed twin space, which is perfect for babies. This pram comes with some very cool accessories, including the newborn cocoons that can be positioned either facing forwards or in any direction (for twin-facing cheap prams). It's not as light as some other options, but it's really cleverly created.

Cybex is renowned for its innovative pushchairs, and the single-to-double is no exception. Its clever frame expands widthways to accommodate an additional seat and you can use it as a twin right from birth with the addition of two newborn cocoons (PS59 each) that provide enclosed, lie-flat areas for infants. It can also be used as mono mode with just one child thanks to a large basket that is placed behind the seat. And it comes with rear and front suspensions to take on bumps and uneven surfaces a little more easily. The top choice among our reviewers.

Tandem

If you're planning to have twins, you'll need a tandem pushchair with car seat. This will allow the children to sit together and see each other. They are perfect for visiting the zoo, as children can observe the animals together. They are also great for parents who have to keep an eye on their toddler and the other eye on their infant because they can see both simultaneously.

Some tandem pushchairs are incredibly adaptable, as they can be converted back to single mode. This is especially handy if you're planning to have more than two kids (or only your oldest child does not require a buggy anymore). This will prevent you from having to store a buggy that's empty which can be expensive.

For instance, the Cybex Venus can be used in mono or double mode, and features a clever frame that can be expanded to accommodate an extra seat. It's not the lightest of pushchairs however it does come with an ample basket that can be set behind the front seat in double mode, or in the back when it's in mono mode. The seats can be placed so that they face one other or higher up to observe what the other is doing.

Other double tandem pushchairs, like the Joolz Geo 3, are capable of seating one over the other or side by side. The sleek, compact frame makes it easier to maneuver through doorways and supermarket aisles. Some models can be used on rough terrain or as an exercise walk due to their wide rear wheels and four-wheel suspension.

Another advantage of a tandem pushchair is that it can include two carrycots, or a car seat, and a buggy seat. This means you can create a travel system from the beginning and save money on additional purchases. Be aware that tandems are heavier and longer, and can feel less stable when bumping into the kerbs or going over uneven surfaces. These pushchairs also need to be dismantled for fitting into cars.
