Alex the African Grey Parrot

When animal psychologist Irene Pepperberg entered a Northwest Side pet shop in 1977 and purchased a haughty one-year-old baby african grey parrot grey parrot named Alex and started a 30-year study that changed the way we view the intelligence of birds. Dr. Pepperberg continued her research with other parrots as well, including Wart and Griffin. She is now a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering work with birds.

What was Alex's intelligence?

He was able to overcome all of these challenges through sheer determination and perseverance. He never gave up his goal of becoming a successful mountain climber. He never gave up on his ambition to become an mountain climber.

Even after his passing, he continues inspiring people around the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about the life of Alex and his incredible achievements in climbing. This film has received much critical acclaim and is regarded as one of the best documentaries ever made. It has won many awards, including the Academy Award in 2019 for Best Documentary Feature.

In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues in bird intelligence. Alex was able to perform more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions, was able to count object sets up to six, and showed math skills that were quite advanced for a bird at the time.

He could also communicate with other animals via signs and had a solid understanding of grammar. He employed an approach to training known as "rival model," which involved two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to learn. The trainers changed places frequently so that the bird could be able to interact with both of them and receive praise and attention from each.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to achieve many things in his lifetime because of his strength of character and his determination to live life on his terms.
