3 Wheeler Buggies

A three-wheeled buggy is ideal for off-road terrain and provides a smooth ride for baby. They are also easier to push and maneuver than a four-wheeler, particularly those with fabric slings or seat units, which are tightly positioned in the frame and deliver the most efficient geometry and distribution of weight.

Stability

Three-wheeled buggys are extremely stable, making them an excellent option for off-roading (especially when they are equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They typically have large front tires that are able to handle bumps, kerbs, and rough terrain. Some have a lockable wheels on the front for additional stability while driving on uneven terrain.

It is important to keep in mind that 3-wheel buggies have lower center of gravity than the 4-wheeled versions which means they are more likely to fall over. The most reliable 3-wheeled pushchairs are designed with perfect design to ensure they stay solid in all conditions. They should be able of turning on a dime and be able to steer with just one hand, and feature a 360o swivelling front wheel which makes them perfect for maneuvering and navigating challenging terrain.

For surfaces that are extremely challenging, look out for models with air-filled tyres which are also referred to as pneumatic tyres. They are designed to work on roads that are not paved and can deal with mud, gravel, rock and so on. Many all-terrain buggies feature an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when tackling extremely rough ground too.

A tri-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run and enjoy walking fast uphill. This is particularly true if you intend to connect a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that can recline flat and features a more comfortable 5-point harness and storage space for all your kit (plus an extension of 50+ sun hood). It's light and compact, and is suitable for use from birth. It can be used with either a car seat or a carrycot. It also handles some light jogging but isn't intended for serious joggers.

Weight

If you're looking for a vehicle that will take on tricky terrain, then you'll need one with large wheels. These will cope well over grass, cobbles and dirt tracks, and provide an enjoyable ride for any passenger. They are also great for jogging as they have a suspension built-in and are easy enough to climb up and down kerbs. The downside is that they're a bit heavy to push.

The Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 is the best 3 wheel buggy for use on rough terrain (pictured above). This 3-wheeler has 16 rear wheels and a lockable swivel front wheel which makes it very maneuverable. It has air tyres which require pumping occasionally and can hold a child up to 3. It is also easy to move kerbs upwards and downwards and fits into a the car's boot space in a small size. It can also be used as a stroller along with baby carriers or toddlers.

Fabric sling seats sit snugly within the frame of the buggie instead of over it like modular seats. This design provides a lower center of gravity and a perfect height, making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never underestimate how often you'll do this as a new parent!)

Seating

The carrycot included is perfect for newborns (which MFM reviewer Alice describes as a cozy and comfortable lying-flat bed that can be used in and out of the buggy). It is important to note that the seats aren't fully reclined however, they can be adjusted to the lowest level which should still give your child plenty of headroom and room to move around.

A sling seat made of cloth is also available. It is positioned snugly inside the frame, rather than over the top of a modular seat and this gives a lower centre of gravity and perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier to push, especially over bumpy terrain and curbs. MFM reviewer Kath liked the way this kind of seat dealt with the obstacles.

This type of buggy has a large basket and other useful features such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, a simple to use brake pedal and some unique visibility lights that can be positioned in front of occupants to increase safety on rough terrain.

Look for a 3-wheeler with 2 (or 3!) seats. This is the best choice for your future and will save you money. The iCandy strawberry sport is among the best of these that can be used as a single seat from day dot, and then transforms to twin buggies when your baby begins walking.

Tyres

These tyres absorb bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more enjoyable. These are found on pushchairs like the Phil and Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath said was "an amazing ride for her toddler". She also noted that its grippy tyres made it easy to tackle kerbs and cobbles.

They can be difficult to maintain their inflation and will need to be topped up frequently. They are also more vulnerable to punctures than foam tyres, so it is essential that you have repair kits, spare inner tube and pump in case you go out and about with your buggy.

PU tyres can be seen on more pushchairs than the air-filled tyres, but they're just as durable. PU tyres are easily identified by their matte finish and supple feel. They also slide across smooth and tidy surfaces.

It's usually possible to tell the distinction between air-filled and PU tyres by running your hand over each one. If it feels firm, then it's rubber and if it slides then it's a PU. You can also check whether your buggy has PU tyres by slipping the tyres onto an even, clean surface - they'll be able to roll easily and should fit snugly into their wheel hubs.

Foam tyres are often utilized in high-performance buggies and Joggers due to their ability to deal with the rough terrain that's associated with this type of pushchair. This can make your buggy less stable because the foam will lose its springy nature. These tyres also make a lot of noise due to the fact that they create a lot noise when you turn and drive around town.
