Evolution Korea

For a long time the Korean scientific community was hesitant about engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credibility. However, silence is no anymore an option.

The STR has been fighting to remove content from textbooks that explain evolution, such as the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestor of birds. But this is merely one aspect of the evolution of the development paradigm.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains the evolution of the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living organisms adapt to their environment, which could result in variations in genes or even whole genomes. Over time these changes could lead to the emergence new species. The most popular theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process by which those with favorable characteristics live and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. This variation in reproduction could, over time, lead to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution" originates from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has evolved in both science and in other fields. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species evolved into new species in a predetermined fashion. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this idea. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, criticized the idea of evolution and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival, or their ability to produce offspring. In time the genetic variability could result in the development of entirely new physical or biological functions in the same population. This change in gene frequencies is called natural selection, and it drives most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, can't be considered to be evolution since they aren't passed on to future generations.

Despite the fact that evolution has stood the test of time and a multitude of scientific studies Creationists have taken advantage of the idea that evolution is controversial to argue that it shouldn't be taught in school. In South Korea, creationists have had a few wins in their efforts to eliminate evolution from high-school textbooks, including the removal of any references to the evolutionary roots of humans, as well as the Archaeopteryx, a feathered dinosaur thought to be the ancestral bird's ancestor.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. They claim that evolution isn't possible because it would require a miracle, and that the scientists who founded modern science rejected miracles out of fear of losing credibility.

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolution movement. The publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will eliminate references to evolution from their textbooks. A group known as the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. The STR has scored its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of an bird, the Archeopteryx. The next step is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research and also on human evolution.

STR claims to have the support of around 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says, is to rid the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists across the country. A survey of undergraduates studying biology found that half didn't believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely clear, but could include religion or the absence of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot through its lectures and seminar events. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, 에볼루션 슬롯 and has published books. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to thousands of people. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries as well. KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future.
