Evolution Korea

For a long time the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with the creationists out of fear of giving the movement more credence. The silence is no longer an option.

What is Evolution?

The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. STR has won its first victory in eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. It is now focusing on removing excerpts from Darwin's infamous finch research and on human evolution, too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4,000 families and members. Its goal is to weed out what it sees as the "atheist materialism" that paints an unhopeful worldview for students. It also aims at countering the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainees in biology revealed that half of them did not believe evolution. The reasons aren't clear, but could include religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the country.

The KACR has accomplished a lot in the past through lectures and seminar events. It also publishes a bimonthly magazine called Creation and the book. One of them was a textbook on natural sciences with a creationist stance. This led to an interest in the college community. In 1991, a professor and minister began teaching Creation Science in one university, and it is taught until today.

On August 6-7 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon.
